This colonial home has been renovated to embrace modernity, while keeping original elements for historical style…

Inspired Renovation

This Colonial Modern home was once just an everyday Yucatecan colonial home. Inspired by the work of renowned Mexican architect Luis Barragan, the architects at the firm odelab in New York City purchased and renovated this colonial home into a modern version of the Merida architectural tradition. The owner asked for something simple, something that drew inspiration from the natural beauty and authenticity of Merida  and its people, while introducing fluidity into the structure and the layout. The result was beautiful: a modern liveable home from the front door to the casita at the rear of the property. Light fills the home during the day, and at night the lighting and structure turn the entire house into a romantic setting. Front gates and doors from the original home were modified and updated for other parts of the home. Original colonial doors and shutters became part of the new design, and anything that could be reused, reshaped, and revived was included in the home, bringing new life to many original and updated elements. In finding ways to “build it green”, the architect also discovered that this philosophy is very much in keeping with the well-accepted practices in Mexico of reuse and repurposing. In the main house, there is a living room, kitchen, office, bedroom and a full bath with pool and garden access. The air-conditioned casita in the rear is a large open space with two queen beds, and a full bath with direct garden and private patio access.

When you stay at the Colonial Modern vacation rental home, there is no need for a car. The bus to the Plaza Grande (the center of the city) stops on the corner next to the house, costs less than 5 cents, and in less than 5 minutes, you will be walking to everything downtown Merida has to offer. Attractions there include the Olimpo Cultural Center, Santa Lucia Park, UADY (the University), the Governor’s Palace with its beautiful historic murals, museums, mercados, shopping, restaurants and more. Possible day trips that are easy to make from the house include Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Progreso, Izamal and many others. Wondering what to do? Check out Yucatan Living’s weekly Events listings.

Guest Testimonials:

“We had an awesome time in this sweet spot in a great city. The pool was delightful and the neighborhood was charming and close to the centre. We were warmly welcomed upon arrival by Ivonne and provided with a lot of useful information about how to get around and what is worth experiencing in the area. For anyone wanting to have a unique experience in Merida that gets you off the regular tourist path, this is a great landing pad and jumping off point.”

“It was like staying at my dream house!! The only sad part of our stay was leaving. The house is awesome and from the moment you step inside you feel like home. Pamela is a great host, and Ivonne, the person who helps her with the house, was also very accommodating and kind. It was a very pleasant experience, the pool is perfect and I’m sure anyone would have a great experience. I would highly recommend it!!”

“We enjoyed our stay very much. The house is spacious and comfortable and located in a non-tourist middle class Merida neighborhood. We loved the swimming pool and the kitchen open to the patio. Both our host Pam and her on-site caretaker Ivonne were very accommodating.”
